CARBON MANAGEMENT

GLYSANTIN^® ECO BMB

For GLYSANTIN^® ECO BMB products, 100% of fossil-based feedstock required for the manufacturing is replaced by certified renewable biomass, according to the biomass-balance approach of BASF (BMB), verified through REDcert2 certification and audited by TÜV Nord in accordance with ISO 22095 standards. As a result, ECO BMB products have a reduced carbon footprint of at least *80% compared to their conventional fossil counterparts.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY INITIATIVES

GLYSANTIN^® ECO LOOP

In addition to the biomass balance approach, BASF is advancing further initiatives that support circular resource use across selected product lines. GLYSANTIN® ECO LOOP leverages recycled monoethylene glycol (MEG) in formulations developed for professional and industrial applications. These solutions are intended for specialized use. Ongoing projects explore various pathways toward circular resource use, including efforts to integrate recycled feedstocks into future product concepts. GLYSANTIN^® ECO BMB - More about the BMB approach

In the biomass balance (BMB) approach, fossil resources are replaced by renewable raw materials in the first step of our production network. Independent certification systems like REDcert² verify and attest the proper replacement of fossil raw materials and the correct attribution to the corresponding products.

GLYSANTIN^® ECO BMB products are available worldwide. Existing approvals remain valid, as the product properties and quality are chemically identical to products derived from fossil raw materials.

In the manufacturing process of the GLYSANTIN^® ECO BMB product line, 100% of the fossil feedstocks have been replaced with renewable feedstocks in the BASF value chain via a certified mass balance approach: GLYSANTIN^® G30^®, GLYSANTIN^® G34^®, GLYSANTIN^® G40^®, GLYSANTIN^® G64^®, GLYSANTIN^® G65^®.

By the use of certified renewable feedstocks, fossil resources are saved in the BASF value chain. This innovative approach allows customers to fulfill their needs for circular and low-PCF solutions while relying on consistent performance and quality of GLYSANTIN^® products.

The variety of powertrain concepts has increased significantly: Advances in vehicles with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Fuel Cells Electric Vehicles (FCEV) as well as Full Hybrid Electric (FHEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) are leading to a wide variety on the roads. As a result, the requirements for engine coolants are also becoming more diverse.

What's your powertrain concept in use?

Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)

In order to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions of combustion engines, smaller, lighter and hotter engines are being developed. New construction materials are being used in the manufacture of the engine cooling system. Other drivers are legislative requirements (e.g., REACH) regarding the components used in the final product. As a result, problems are observed in modern engine coolant systems, e.g., deposits, reduced functionality of the heat exchanger and increased corrosion. This requires new breakthrough technologies when it comes to future engine coolant solutions.

GLYSANTIN^® G64^®and GLYSANTIN^® G65^® not only exceed all technical requirements and fulfill the demanding legislative requirements, they also ensure optimum engine performance and longevity.

Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV), Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

Hybrid technologies present the most complex thermal management challenge. The integrated combustion engine requires a coolant to handle the heat generated at high temperatures. At the same time, the battery, electric motor and other electronic components must be cooled to lower temperatures without compromising corrosion protection and material compatibility.

Products such as GLYSANTIN^® G30^®, G34^®, G40^®, G64^® and G65^®work effectively in a broad temperature window, allowing for outstanding heat transfer and corrosion protection in the high temperature cooling circuit of the ICE as well the low temperature cooling circuit for the battery pack.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)

Many of BASF's traditional coolants are already successfully used in battery electric vehicles.
Products such as GLYSANTIN^® G30^®, G34^®, G40^®, G64^® and G65^® help to keep battery electric vehicles in their ideal thermal window and enable optimal driving range. These products not only offer excellent stability at high temperatures, but also effectively prevent corrosion over a wide temperature window. As a result, good passivation is achieved in the low temperature cooling circuits for the battery pack as well as in the higher temperature circuits, e.g. for the electric motor.

GLYSANTIN^® G22^® ELECTRIFIED^® is BASF's first premium engine coolant developed specifically for indirectly cooled battery electric vehicles. The ready-to-use coolant has low electrical conductivity and maintains low and stable currents when in contact with a voltage source. This results in low liquid decomposition and low hydrogen evolution, making it a safety-optimized product while ensuring optimal corrosion protection.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV)

BASF's engine coolant GLYSANTIN^® FC G20^® ELECTRIFIED^® has been specially developed to protect vehicles with a fuel cell powertrain against overheating, corrosion and frost. GLYSANTIN^® FC G20^® ELECTRIFIED^® Ready Mix provides extremely low electrical conductivity and can therefore be used with ion exchange resins in the fuel cell cooling system. Compared to non-inhibited glycol-water mixtures, the product maintains a consistently low electrical conductivity, ensuring the electrical safety of the system and reducing energy loss.

*Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reduction is calculated using the ISO 14067:2018 methodology on a cradle-to-gate basis. The methodology has been certified by TÜV Rheinland. Calculations exclude downstream emissions and carbon offsetting
